The "New Minority" That I Wrote About In 2005 Has Finally Happened

I wrote the below 2005 post on my Yahoo GeoCities website before they were called blogs (short for Weblogs).  While that platform no longer exists, the Internet Wayback Machine at Archive.org saved a copy, as the IWM does for almost every webpage on the internet. I did go through and edit some of the grammar issues now that I have been back in college a few years and know a LOT more about writing than I did back then.

“THE NEW MINOR(ITY). ANOTHER RIDICULOUS PROPOSAL -- OR NOT?”

Re:  If so many "other adults" want to discriminate against 18, 19 and 20-year-old adults, then those "other adults" should VOTE to raise the "age of majority" (adulthood) back up to 21 years of age.

Several things that will change or should be changed for "The New Minor(ity)":

1.  The new "minors" will no longer be able to VOTE, join the military, sign the selective service card, get married, sign contracts or perform any other legal matter reserved for adults.  Further, the new "minors" should not be allowed to become a legal guardian (parent) to a baby.  If a new "minor" has, or fathers a baby, then one of each of the "minors" parents or guardians have to sign legal guardianship papers and agree to raise and support the "minors" and their baby until the "minors" reach the age of 21.  One adult parent of the "minor mom" and "minor dad" must sign as legal guardians, making sure the rest of the taxpayers are not forced to pay for the acts of these new "minors".  (Actually, this concept should be instituted today, even if the age of majority is not raised back up to 21.)

2.  The new "minors" will be treated as juveniles for all criminal acts as long as they are "minors" (i.e.- Slapped on the wrist for most crimes.)  Except, I propose creating a "three strikes and you’re out" and "nine innings" program where a new "minor" offender convicted "three times" or arrested "nine times" would be treated like an adult on all subsequent arrests and convictions.  (This too would make sense today, even if the age of majority were not raised.)

3.  The new "minors" should not be taxed in any way, shape or form since our country was founded to prevent "taxation without representation".  Since I don't see where any of the politicians represent the new "minors" and the new "minors" would not be allowed to VOTE, they should be tax-exempt for all income earned and purchases made.  (This should be made part of the tax code today.)  (But we know that our "tax and spend" politicians are not going to exempt this large group of "minor" taxpayers, even though these same politicians have no problem passing age-specific laws and prohibitions against this same group of "minor" taxpayers.)

4.  The new "minors" will be tax-deductible to parents for a few more years.  Since the new "minors" will not be legally responsible for their actions until they reach the age of 21, their parents will be held responsible for any accidents, civil and criminal actions, debts, education, auto and health insurance, etc.  Further, their parents will not be able to treat their new "minor" (18, 19 and 20-year-old) children as adults either.

5.  The new "minors" will not be able to control their own bank accounts or credit cards and would, therefore, require their parents to co-sign for everything the "minors" do.  Further, the parents would have to accompany them on trips to the mall, stores, etc. to sign checks and credit card vouchers.  This would affect all retail sales, car sales, etc. and would put additional strains on the leisure time of the American family.

6.  Of course, the new "minors" will not be able to smoke, drink, gamble or buy a handgun, BUT HECK; they can’t do those things now.  (Or at least not in the very near future with the way things are going.)

Obvious the above proposals are ridiculous.  I think that all "18, 19 and 20-year-old adults" should have the same rights and privileges as any "other adult".  Because of spineless politicians, special interest groups and the "other adults" (who sit quietly by and watch as this age discrimination takes place), many of the rights and privileges are being stripped, or have been stripped, from the new "minor(ity)".

I propose reversing this trend and giving back all of the adult rights and privileges to 18, 19 and 20-year-olds and getting rid of this new "minor(ity)".  Or we should VOTE to change the age of majority back to 21 years of age and strip anyone under 21 of all rights and privileges, granted to adults, and the responsibility that comes with those rights and privileges.

NOTICE:

ALL OF YOU SPINELESS POLITICIANS AND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS (i.e.-M. A. D. D., etc.) CAN NOW TELL ALL THE "OTHER ADULTS" TO STAND UP, FOR A FEW MORE YEARS, AND RAISE THEIR NEW "MINOR" CHILDREN AND THE BABIES THAT COME WITH THEM.  FURTHER, YOU CAN TELL THE "OTHER ADULTS" TO PAY THE INCREASES ON THE FAMILY AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE POLICY THAT WILL INEVITABLY HAPPEN WHEN ALL OF THESE NEW "MINORS" ARE ADDED BACK TO THE FAMILY POLICY.  THE "OTHER ADULTS" WILL HAVE TO HELP WITH THE SHOPPING AND GO TO TRAFFIC COURT AND JUVENILE COURT WITH THEIR NEW "MINOR" CHILDREN.  THE "OTHER ADULTS" WILL ALSO BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR NEW "MINOR" CHILDREN UNTIL THEY REACH THE AGE OF 21, INSTEAD OF THE CURRENT AGE OF 18.

ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO RAISE THE AGE OF MAJORITY BACK TO 21?

This is one of my favorite stories about the Marine Corps.  My dad was stationed at Parris Island when I was born and my oldest brother and dad both retired from the Marine Corps.  I always heard this story while growing up and after talking to a few young Marine Corps guest recently, they hadn't heard it so maybe political correctness has kept the story out of common circulation so I thought I'd share it on all my blogs to keep it alive... regardless of political correctness running amok!

What is a Marine?

The USMC is over 237 years of romping, stomping, hell, death and destruction. The finest fighting machine the world has ever seen. We were born in a bomb crater, our mother was an M-16 and our father was the devil. Each moment that I live is an additional threat upon your life.

I am a rough looking, roving soldier of the sea. I am cocky, self-centered, overbearing, and I do not know the meaning of fear, for I am fear itself. I am a green, amphibious monster made of blood and guts who arose from the sea, festering on anti-Americans throughout the globe. Whenever it may arise, and when my time comes, I will die a glorious death on the battlefield, giving my life to mom, the Corps, and the American flag.

We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the anchor from the Navy, and the rope from the Army. On the 7th day, while God rested, we over-ran his perimeter and stole the globe, and we've been running the show ever since.

We live like soldiers and talk like sailors and slap the hell out of both of them. Soldier by day, lover by night, drunkard by choice,

We fight our country's battles in the air, on land and sea.

History of the Hymn

Following the war with the Barbary Pirates in 1805, when Lieutenant P.N. O'Bannon and his small force of Marines participated in the capture of Derne and hoisted the American flag for the first time over a fortress of the Old World, the Colors of the Corps was inscribed with the words: "To the Shores of Tripoli." After the Marines had participated in the capture and occupation of Mexico City and the Castle of Chapultepec, otherwise known as the "Halls of Montezuma," the words on the Colors were changed to read: "From the Shores of Tripoli to the Halls of Montezuma."

Following the close of the Mexican War came the first verse of the Marines' Hymn, written, according to tradition, by a Marine on duty in Mexico. For the sake of euphony, the unknown author transposed the phrases in the motto on the Colors so that the first two lines of the Hymn would read: "From the Halls of Montezuma, To the Shores of Tripoli."

A serious attempt to trace the tune of the Marines' Hymn to its source is revealed in correspondence between Colonel A.S. McLemore, USMC, and Walter F. Smith, the second leader of the Marine Band. Colonel McLemore wrote: "Major Richard Wallach, USMC, says that in 1878 when he was in Paris, France, the aria to which the Marines' Hymn is now sung was a very popular one." The name of the opera and a part of the chorus was secured from Major Wallach and forwarded to Mr. Smith, who replied: "Major Wallach is to be congratulated upon a wonderfully accurate musical memory, for the aria of the Marine Hymn is certainly to be found in the opera, 'Genevieve de Brabant'. The melody is not in the exact form of the Marine Hymn but is undoubtedly the aria from which it was taken. I am informed, however, by one of the members of the band, who has a Spanish wife, that the aria was one familiar to her childhood and it may, therefore, be a Spanish folk song."

In a letter to Major Harold F. Wingman, USMC, dated 18 July [1919], John Philip Sousa wrote: "The melody of the 'Halls of Montezuma' is taken from Offenbach's comic opera, 'Genevieve de Brabant' and is sung by two gendarmes." Most people believe that the aria of the Marines' Hymn was, in fact, taken from "Genevieve de Brabant," an opera-bouffe (a farcical form of opera, generally termed musical comedy) composed by Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880), and presented at the Theatre de Bouffes Parisiens, Paris, on November 19, 1859.

Offenbach was born in Cologne, Germany, on June 20, 1819, and died on October 5, 1880. He studied music from an early age and in 1838 entered the Paris Conservatoire as a student. In 1834 he was admitted as a violoncellist to the Opera Comique and soon attained much popularity with Parisien audiences. He became conductor of the Theatre Francais in 1847 and subsequently leased the Theatre Comte, which he reopened as the Bouffes-Parisiens. Most of his operas are classed as comic (light and fanciful) and include numerous popular productions, many of which still hold a high place in European and American countries.

Genevieve de Brabant was the wife of Count Siegfried of Brabant. Brabant, a district in the central lowlands of Holland and Belgium, formerly constituted an independent duchy. The southern portions were inhabited by Walloons, a class of people now occupying the southeastern part of Belgium, especially the provinces of Liege, Arlon, and Namur.

Every campaign the Marines have taken part in gives birth to an unofficial verse. For example, the following from Iceland:

"Again in nineteen forty-one
We sailed a north'ard course
And found beneath the midnight sun,
The Viking and the Norse.
The Iceland girls were slim and fair,
And fair the Iceland scenes,
And the Army found in landing there,
The United States Marines."

Copyright ownership of the Marines' Hymn was vested in the United States Marine Corps per certificate of registration dated August 19, 1991, but is now in the public domain. In 1929, the Commandant of the Marine Corps authorized the following verses of the Marines' Hymn as the official version.

On November 21, 1942, the Commandant of the Marine Corps approved a change in the words of the fourth line, first verse, to read, "In air, on land, and sea."

Former-Gunnery Sergeant H.L. Tallman, a veteran observer in Marine Corps Aviation who participated in many combat missions with Marine Corps Aviation over the Western Front in World War I, first proposed the change at a meeting of the First Marine Aviation Force Veterans Association in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Many interesting stories have been associated with the Marines' Hymn. One of the best was published in the Stars and Stripes, the official newspaper of the AEF, under date of August 16, 1918.

"A wounded officer from among the gallant French lancers had just been carried into a Yankee field hospital to have his dressing changed. He was full of compliments and curiosity about the dashing contingent that fought at his regiment's left.

"'A lot of them are mounted troops by this time,' he explained, 'for when our men would be shot from their horses, these youngsters would give one running jump and gallop ahead as cavalry. I believe they are soldiers from Montezuma. At least, when they advanced this morning, they were all singing "From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli".'"

The Marines' Hymn has been sung and played in all of the four corners of the earth and today is recognized as one of the foremost service songs.

The history of the Marine Corps emblem is a story related to the history of the Corps itself. The emblem of today traces its roots to the designs and ornaments of early Continental Marines as well as British Royal Marines. The emblem took its present form in 1868. Before that time many devices, ornaments, and distinguishing marks followed one another as official marks of the Corps.

In 1776, the device consisted of a "foul anchor" of silver or pewter. The foul anchor still forms a part of the emblem today. (A foul anchor is an anchor which has one or more turns of the chain around it). Changes were made in 1798, 1821, and 1824. In 1834 it was prescribed that a brass eagle be worn on the hat, the eagle to measure 3 1/2 inches from wingtip to wingtip.

During the early years, numerous distinguishing marks were prescribed, including "black cockades, "scarlet plumes," and "yellow bands and tassels." In 1859 the origin of the present color scheme for the officer's dress uniform ornaments appeared on an elaborate device of solid white metal and yellow metal. The design included a United States shield, half wreath, a bugle, and the letter "M."

In 1868, Brigadier General Commandant Jacob Zeilin appointed a board "to decide and report upon the various devices of cap ornaments for the Marine Corps." On 13 November 1868, the board turned in its report. It was approved by the Commandant four days later, and on 19 November 1868 was signed by the Secretary of the Navy.

The emblem recommended by this board has survived with minor changes to this day. It consists of a globe (showing the Western Hemisphere) intersected by a foul anchor and surmounted by a spread eagle. On the emblem itself, the device is topped by a ribbon inscribed with the Latin motto "Semper Fidelis" (Always Faithful). The uniform ornaments omit the motto ribbon.

The general design of the emblem was probably derived from the British Royal Marines' "Globe and Laurel." The globe on the U.S. Marine emblem signifies service in any part of the world. The eagle also indirectly signifies service worldwide, although this may not have been the intention of the designers in 1868. The eagle they selected for the Marine emblem is a crested eagle, a type found all over the world. On the other hand, the eagle pictured on the great seal and the currency of the United States is the bald eagle, strictly an American variety. The anchor, whose origin dates back to the founding of the Marine Corps in 1775, indicates the amphibious nature of Marines' duties.

The Marine Corps Seal, designed by the Marine Corps Uniform Board in accordance with instructions of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, then General Lemuel G. Shepherd, Jr., was adopted by Presidential Executive Order 10538 of 22 June 1954.

The traditional Marine Corps emblem - eagle, globe and foul anchor - forms the basic device of the Seal. Of these three, the eagle and the foul anchor are the most venerable, dating from 1800 when they first appeared on the Marine uniform button - a button which has remained to this day virtually unchanged from its original form. Influenced strongly by the design of the emblem of the British Royal Marines depicting as their domain the Eastern hemisphere, the U.S. Marines adopted in 1868 as their emblem a globe showing the Western hemisphere. To this was added the spread eagle and foul anchor from the button. Twelve years later the motto, "Semper Fidelis," completed the design.

The scarlet and gold surrounding the emblem are the official Marine Corps colors. These, in turn, are enclosed by Navy blue and gold signifying the Marine Corps as an integral part of the naval team.

No one knows with absolute certainty who designed the first stars and stripes or who made it. Congressman Francis Hopkinson seems most likely to have designed it, and few historians believe that Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress, made the first one.

Until the Executive Order of June 24, 1912, neither the order of the stars nor the proportions of the flag were prescribed. Consequently, flags dating before this period sometimes show unusual arrangements of the stars and odd proportions, these features being left to the discretion of the flag maker. In general, however, straight rows of stars and proportions similar to those later adopted officially were used. The principal acts affecting the flag of the United States are the following:

On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act: "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

Act of January 13, 1794 - provided for 15 stripes and 15 stars after May 1795.

Act of April 4, 1818 - provided for 13 stripes and one star for each state, to be added to the flag on the 4th of July following the admission of each new state, signed by President Monroe.

Executive Order of President Taft dated June 24, 1912 - established proportions of the flag and provided for arrangement of the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each, a single point of each star to be upward.

Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated January 3, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically.

Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated August 21, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in nine rows of stars staggered horizontally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically.


"First to Fight"
Marines have been in the forefront of every American war since the founding of the Corps. They have carried out over 300 landings on foreign shores. They have served everywhere, from the poles to the tropics. Their record of readiness reflects pride, responsibility, and challenge.


"Semper Fi"
That Marines have lived up to their motto, "Semper Fidelis" (Latin for Always Faithful), is proven by the fact that there has never been a mutiny among U.S. Marines. This motto was adopted about 1883. Before that, there had been three mottoes, all traditional rather than official. The first, "Fortitudine" (With Fortitude), appeared about 1812. The second, "By Sea and by Land," was obviously a translation of the Royal Marines' "Per Mare, Per Terram." Until 1848, the third motto was "To the Shores of Tripoli," in commemoration of O'Bannon's capture of Derne in 1805. In 1848, after the return to Washington of the Marine battalion which took part in the capture of Mexico City, this motto was revised to "From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli." The current Marine Corps motto is shared with England's Devonshire Regiment.


"Leathernecks"
The Marines' long-standing nickname goes back to the leather stock or neckpiece, which was part of the Marine uniform from 1775 to 1875. The leather bands around their throats were intended to ensure that Marines kept their heads erect.


"Devil Dogs"
In the Belleau Wood fighting in 1918, the Germans received a thorough indoctrination in the fighting ability of the Marines. Fighting through supposedly impenetrable woods and capturing supposedly untakeable terrain, the persistent attacks, delivered with unbelievable courage soon had the Germans calling Marines "Teufelhunde," referring to the fierce fighting dogs of legendary origin. Ooohhh Raaah!


"Esprit de Corps"
The "spirit" of a unit. This spirit is commonly reflected by all members. It implies devotion and loyalty to the Marine Corps, with deep regard for history, traditions, and honor.


"Uncommon Valor"
This refers to the victories in World War II, especially at Iwo Jima, the largest all-Marine battle in history. Admiral Nimitz's ringing epitome of Marine fighting on Iwo Jima was applied to the entire Marine Corps in World War II: "Uncommon valor was a common virtue."


"Gyrenes"
The term "gyrene" is a jocular reference to Marines which was first used in England as early as 1894. It was used in the United States around the time of World War I. Its exact origin is unknown, but it did appear to have a derogatory meaning in its early usage. It has been suggested that the term may embody a reference to pollywog, a naval slang term for a person who has not yet "crossed" (the equator), hence, a landlubber.


"Jarhead"
A slang term used by sailors as early as World War II to refer to members of the Marine Corps, drawing the term from the resemblance of the Marine dress blues uniform, with its high collar, to a Mason jar.

General Order 1
To take charge of this post and all government property in view.

General Order 2

To walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing.

General Order 3

To report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce.

General Order 4

To repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guardhouse than my own.

General Order 5

To quit my post only when properly relieved.

General Order 6

To receive, obey and pass on to the sentry who relieves me all orders from the commanding officer, officer of the day, and officers and noncommissioned officers of the guard only.

ARTICLE I:

I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.

I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender the members of my command while they still have the means to resist.

ARTICLE III:

If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and to aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.

ARTICLE IV:

If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information nor take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them in every way.

ARTICLE V:

When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country or its allies or harmful to their cause.

ARTICLE VI:

I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

Creed of the USMC

THIS IS MY RIFLE. There are many like it but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend.
It is my life.
I must master it as I master my life.

My rifle, without me is useless.
Without my rifle, I am useless.
I must fire my rifle true.
I must shoot straighter than any enemy who is trying to kill me.
I must shoot him before he shoots me.

My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make.
We know that it is the hits that count.

One of the main aspects of military courtesy is the salute. It is a gesture of respect and a sign of comradeship among service personnel.

Accordingly, it is a uniform gesture; meaning that the highest man in rank in the Marine Corps returns the salute in the same form in which it is rendered to him.

By saluting first, no officer or man implies that he is in any sense inferior of the senior whom he salutes.

The words of General John J. Pershing, commanding general of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I indicate the importance of saluting in the minds of fighting men. "Send me who can shoot and salute," he demanded.

The salute probably originated in the days of chivalry when knights in mail raised their visors to friends for the purpose of identification. Because of strict adherence to rank, the junior was required to make the first gesture.

Still, another probability as to the originating of a salute comes from the time when assassinations by dagger were not uncommon. It became the custom to approach each other with raised hand, palm to the front, showing that there was no concealed weapon.

It seems reasonable to assume that the hand salute as now rendered stems to some degrees, from the British Navy. There is general agreement that the hand salute is actually the first part of uncovering. That was the start, uncovering in front of a senior.

Gradually, that was changed into merely touching the cap, and now the present salute.

There are many types of salutes; the hand salute; the rifle salute at order arms; the rifle salute at right shoulder; the rifle salute at present arms. Another type of salute in eyes right, given by men in ranks when passing in review.

The noisiest salute rendered is a gun salute which has quite a history. Actually, perhaps in a sadistical sense, there is also a bit of humor attached to the gun salutes as rendered years ago by not so accurate gunners.

During the days of Columbus, after firing a salute, it would take as much as a half an hour to reload the guns. Therefore, the first ship firing the salute showed that he came in peace, and after firing the gun, was helpless.

It is said that firing blanks is the safest way of firing a gun salute; at least safest for the individual being honored. History records that at least one man so being honored was killed by unskilled gunners who blasted him with a cannonball!

The origin of a 21-gun salute, an international salute, took years to come into being. Originally warships fired salutes of seven guns, probably because the number had some mystical or symbolical significance stemming from the Bible.

Although regulations stated that the salute at sea was seven guns, shore batteries were authorized to fire three guns to the ship's one, the difference being due to the storage of powder. Lack of facilities for maintaining low and even temperatures aboard ship was a serious problem for powder spoiled easily.

In shore batteries, the powder was easily stored near the guns.

With the powder as we now know it, (one that preserves at sea longer) the number of guns for the naval international salute was raised to 21.

Another type of salute is rendered over a grave. Originally three volleys were fired into the air, to "scare away evil spirits escaping from the dead." It was thought that their hearts were ajar at such time, allowing the devil to enter.

Today, the gun salutes, as rifle salutes and hand salutes, are all administered by the individual, the group or the ship as a sign of respect.

Dating from the time of Columbus and Roman emperors, the salute has become an important part of a proud tradition. The salute means something...something important. Learn how to use it, and use it well.

A Happy Haloween 2016

Prologue: I actually wrote this as a class assignment for Writing For The Media I, during the Fall 2016 semester. It may be my first Pulitzer-eligible story! My professor, Susan Hague, gave the class a break and said we could write a scary story for Halloween, still adhering to AP Style writing but having the latitude to make it fiction. Of course, my story ended up being mostly nonfiction.
A Scary Night In New Orleans
It was a dark, foggy night in late October 1980.  A group of recent high school graduates from Bonnabel High School decided to visit the “Old Haunted House in Lakeview,” near West End Blvd. and Harrison Ave.  They wanted to show a visitor what a real-life haunted house looked like.
It was a 3-story Gothic-looking, gray stone building — almost castle-like.  It looked like something out of any classic horror movie.  Legend has it that two old crazy ladies lived in the house.
The kids piled into their cars in the Kenner-Metairie area and drove to the “Old Haunted House in Lakeview”.  As they pulled up on the street, they noticed all the streetlights were out, making things even eerier.  The full moon barely lit up the area through the dense fog.
They got out of their cars and the teen girls were hugging the teen boys tightly — part of their plan.  They moved around from the front of the house to the side, sticking close together.  The big, corner house took up most of the block on two sides.
One of the teen boys, Donald, decided to jump the fence as the girls and the other boys tried to persuade him not to do it.  It didn’t work and he disappeared over the fence, into the darkness.  A neighborhood dog started barking, scaring everyone.  Nobody saw Donald again that night.
The teens continued looking around and jokingly scaring each other.  Every once in a while, one of them would holler out for Donald but he never replied.  They figured he was just going to scare them at some point.
Then, one of the girls saw a candle in a third-floor window and she let out a scream.  The other girls and boys looked up and they could see the slightly lit up face of one of the old crazy ladies, looking down at them.  The old crazy lady opened the window, let out a bloodcurdling scream and threw some kind of glitter-like powder down at them — screaming that they were all cursed for the rest of their lives.
Their worst nightmare was about to come true as things started spinning like they were stuck in a time portal or a black hole.  They all passed out.
They woke up 36 years later, on the morning of Nov. 9, 2016, not knowing that Donald somehow escaped that night, went on to become a billionaire, and won the presidency in November 2016.  They also saw that his beaten-down opponent was actually the crazy old lady that put a curse on them in 1980.

I did not originally report on this but after sharing the El Paso Walmart shooter's manifesto, I thought it would be best to also share the manifesto of the Antifa attacker at the Ice Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington, on July 15, 2019. I was not able to find a manifesto from the Antifa Dayton Ohio mass shooter but according to other reports, he had a long history of pro-Antifa, pro-Elizabeth Warren, and socialist views on his social media accounts.

when i was a boy, in post war holland, later france, my head was filled with stories of the rise of fascism in the 30's. i promised myself that i would not be one of those who stands by as neighbors are torn from their homes and imprisoned for somehow being perceived as lesser.

don't let your silly government agencies spend money "investigating" this one. i was radicalized in civics class at 13 when we were taught about the electoral college. it was at that point that i decided that the status quo might be a house of cards. further reading confirmed in the positive. i highly recommend reading!

MAYOR CANTRELL, PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIALS UNVEIL FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor LaToya Cantrell and public safety officials today announced the implementation of a new flood warning system and highlighted other investments made in flood preparedness in the two years since the Aug. 5, 2017, rain event that caused widespread flooding across the city.

“Two years ago a perfect storm of infrastructure failures and torrential rains exposed stark flaws in our drainage system and our flood preparedness,” said Mayor Cantrell. “Since that time, we have worked relentlessly to address our critical needs, to invest in our infrastructure, and to make strategic, meaningful improvements. This new flood warning system is a strong next step, enabling us to detect and monitor rising water in high-risk areas and to alert drivers to danger. This system replaces the temporary deployment of barricades, freeing up our first responders during a rain event and helping us all to stay safe.”

City Installs Flood Warning System

Sensors, weather stations, and roadway warning signs have been installed at 12 underpass locations prone to flooding during heavy rain due to their low elevation. Flood sensors will detect when the water rises in the low-lying section of the road and will trigger beacons on each side of the underpass to flash, which indicates to drivers that the road is closed due to high water.

Because these locations dip under bridges, they are prone to frequent and flash flooding during heavy rain as water from surrounding streets rushes to the lowest point. The drop in the roadway also makes it difficult for drivers to register the depth of the water when flooded. Consequently, these underpasses have been frequent sites of stalled vehicles and water rescues during storms.

In 2018, public safety agencies implemented "Operation Underpass,” a joint effort of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and New Orleans Fire Department to quickly erect barricades blocking motorists from driving into flooded underpasses. The new flood warning system will replace Operation Underpass and will allow those agencies to redeploy personnel to other priority assignments.

“I’d like to remind motorists to never drive through flooded roads,” said NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson. “Doing so can be life-threatening and can cause significant damage to vehicles, homes, and businesses. With these flood warning signs at underpasses, the message is clear: if the lights are flashing, the road is closed.”

Beyond warning motorists to turn around, the flood warning system will also provide an additional layer of critical, real-time information to the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP), the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, and the National Weather Service during storms. Each installation includes a weather station that measures the real-time rate of rainfall, rainfall total, temperature, and wind speed at the underpass location. There is also a public safety camera connected to the City’s Real-Time Crime Center at nearly all sites.

“Impacts from storms can be highly localized,” said NOHSEP Director Collin Arnold. “Having twelve calibrated weather stations spread throughout the city will give our emergency managers and our drainage partners significantly more situational awareness to make critical and timely decisions during storms.”

Road closure data from the flood warning system will also eventually be displayed publicly on the City’s real-time road hazard website, streetwise.nola.gov.

High Sierra Electronics, a company specializing in environmental monitoring systems, installed the flood warning system, which was procured and project managed by NOHSEP. The cost of the system was approximately $650,000 and was paid for by funds made available in response to the Aug. 5, 2017, flood event. The system is scalable, so as funds become available, additional locations of frequent street flooding will be considered for installation.

Residents Encouraged to Get Ready for Rain

The City of New Orleans is encouraging residents to be ready for rain, which continues to be one of the primary hazards faced in Southeast Louisiana. New Orleans is one of the rainiest cities in the country, with an average of 62 inches of rain each year; and in July 2019 alone, the National Weather Service’s Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service indicated that parts of New Orleans saw between 15 to 20 inches of rain. Excess rainwater that cannot be absorbed must be pumped out, so when heavy rain outpaces the ground's ability to absorb water and the drainage system's capacity, minor and even major flooding can happen.

The City and its partners are investing billions to reduce flooding and improve resilience, including $300 million toward hazard mitigation and resilience projects, $2.4 billion to restore damaged infrastructure, and $5 million for residential green infrastructure, alongside the completion of the $14 billion Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System and SELA drainage projects.

However, there are steps residents can take as well to insure their property and reduce risk. The City encourages residents to visit ready.nola.gov/rain to learn more about what they can do to reduce their flood risk and to consider the following tips:

The custom-built Ready for Rain property search tool pulls together data from the Flood Insurance Rate Map, LIDAR ground elevation, and the City’s building code to provide an easy-to-understand glimpse of flood risk in New Orleans.

Whether you’re a renter or homeowner, get flood insurance to protect your property

New flood maps were adopted in 2016, making flood insurance even more affordable for many New Orleanians, with the average annual flood insurance premium at $650. Recent floods across the country continue to show that flood insurance provides more recovery dollars than post-disaster assistance programs. In fact, in the past 20 years, New Orleans property owners received seven times more from flood insurance payouts than from post-disaster FEMA funds.

Consider projects to reduce flooding in your yard, including green infrastructure From cleaning gutters, downspouts and in front of catch basins to elevating utilities and structures, there are things you can do to reduce your flood risk. Simple projects like installing a rain garden or rain barrel can also help absorb or hold rainwater, keeping it off the street and away from your structure. Many local community organizations and grant programs are available to assist residents with green infrastructure and mitigation projects.

The preamble was taken from my own Facebook post before editing the many grammar issues in the manifesto, to make it more readable. I left many of the typos and grammatical errors in place if they did not affect the context.

Preamble -- While I do not suggest that most people visit the 4Chan and 8Chan website forums, due to the numerous hackers on each, I used available technology to protect myself and found the "Manifesto" of today's El Paso TX Walmart Shooter. I downloaded it into PDF format, then scanned it with several anti-malware programs before opening it. I have pasted it here in plaintext format so it's harmless to the reader--at least from malware. The Inconvenient Truth About Me

In general, I support the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto. This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas. They are the instigators, not me. I am simply defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion. Some people will think this statement is hypocritical because of the nearly complete ethnic and cultural destruction brought to the Native Americans by our European ancestors, but this just reinforces my point. The natives didn’t take the invasion of Europeans seriously, and now what’s left is just a shadow of what was. My motives for this attack are not at all personal. Actually, the Hispanic community was not my target before I read The Great Replacement. This manifesto will cover the political and economic reasons behind the attack, my gear, my expectations of what response this will generate and my personal motivations and thoughts.

Political Reasons

In short, America is rotting from the inside out, and peaceful means to stop this seem to be nearly impossible. The inconvenient truth is that our leaders, both Democrat AND Republican, have been failing us for decades. They are either complacent or involved in one of the biggest betrayals of the American public in our history. The takeover of the United States government by unchecked corporations. I could write a ten-page essay on all the damage these corporations have caused, but here is what is important. Due to the death of the baby boomers, the increasingly anti-immigrant rhetoric of the right and the ever-increasing Hispanic population, America will soon become a one party-state. The Democrat party will own America and they know it. They have already begun the transition by pandering heavily to the Hispanic voting bloc in the 1st  Democratic Debate. They intend to use open borders, free healthcare for illegals, citizenship and more to enact a political coup by importing and then legalizing millions of new voters. With policies like these, the Hispanic support for Democrats will likely become nearly unanimous in the future. The heavy Hispanic population in Texas will make us a Democrat stronghold. Losing Texas and a few other states with heavy Hispanic population to the Democrats is all it would take for them to win nearly every presidential election. Although the Republican Party is also terrible. Many factions within the Republican Party are pro-corporation. Pro-corporation = pro-immigration. But some factions within the Republican Party don’t prioritize corporations over our future. So, the Democrats are nearly unanimous with their support of immigration while the Republicans are divided over it. At least with Republicans, the process of mass immigration and citizenship can be greatly reduced.

Economic Reasons

In short, immigration can only be detrimental to the future of America. Continued immigration will make one of the biggest issues of our time, automation, so much worse. Some sources say that in under two decades, half of American jobs will be lost to it. Of course, some people will be retrained, but most will not.  So, it makes no sense to keep on letting millions of illegal or legal immigrants flood into the United States, and to keep the tens of millions that are already here. Invaders who also have close to the highest birthrate of all ethnicities in America. In the near future, America will have to initiate a basic universal income to prevent widespread poverty and civil unrest as people lose their jobs. Joblessness in itself is a source of civil unrest. The less dependents [dependence] on a government welfare system, the better. The lower the unemployment rate, the better. Achieving ambitions [in] social projects like universal healthcare and UBI would become far more likely to succeed if tens of millions of dependents are removed.

Even though new migrants do the dirty work, their kids typically don’t. They want to live the American Dream which is why they get college degrees and fill higher-paying skilled positions. This is why corporations lobby for even more illegal immigration even after decades of it happening. They need to keep replenishing the low-skilled labor pool. Even as migrant children flood skilled jobs, Corporations make this worse by lobbying for even more work visas to be issued for skilled foreign workers to come here. Recently, the Senate under a REPUBLICAN administration has greatly increased the number of foreign workers that will take American jobs. Remember that both Democrats and Republicans support immigration and work visas. Corporations need to keep replenishing the labor pool for both skilled and unskilled jobs to keep wages down. So Automation is a good thing as it will eliminate the need for new migrants to fill unskilled jobs. Jobs that Americans can’t survive on anyway. Automation can and would replace millions of low-skilled jobs if immigrants were deported. This source of competition for skilled labor from immigrants and visa holders around the world has made a very difficult situation even worse for natives as they compete in the skilled job market. To compete, people have to get better credentials by spending more time in college. It used to be that a high school degree was worth something. Now a bachelor’s degree is what’s recommended to be competitive in the job market. The cost of college degrees has exploded as their value has plummeted. This has led to a generation of indebted, overqualified students filling menial, low paying, and unfulfilling jobs. Of course, these migrants and their children have contributed to the problem, but are not the sole cause of it.

The American lifestyle affords our citizens an incredible quality of life. However, our lifestyle is destroying the environment of our country. The decimation of the environment is creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly overharvesting resources. This has been a problem for decades. For example, this phenomenon is brilliantly portrayed in the decades-old classic “The Lorax”. Water sheds around the country, especially in agricultural areas, are being depleted. Freshwater is being polluted from farming and oil drilling operations. Consumer culture is creating thousands of tons of unnecessary plastic waste and electronic waste, and recycling to help slow this down is almost non-existent. Urban sprawl creates inefficient cities which unnecessarily destroys millions of acres of land. We even use god knows how many trees worth of paper towels just wipe water off our hands. Everything I have seen and heard in my short life has led me to believe that the average American isn’t willing to change their lifestyle, even if the changes only cause a slight inconvenience. The government is unwilling to tackle these issues beyond empty promises since they are owned by corporations. Corporations that also like immigration because more people mean a bigger market for their products. I just want to say that I love the people of this country, but god damn most of y’all are just too stubborn to change your lifestyle. So, the next logical step is to decrease the number of people in America using resources. If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can become more sustainable.

Gear

Main gun: AK47 (WASR 10) – I realized pretty quickly that this isn’t a great choice since it’s the civilian version of the ak47. It’s not designed to shoot rounds quickly, so it overheats massively after about 100 shots fired in quick succession. I’ll have to use a heat-resistant glove to get around this.

8m3 bullet: This bullet, unlike pretty much any other 7.62x39 bullet, actually fragments like a pistol hollow point when shot out of an ak47 at the cost of penetration. Penetration is still reasonable, but not nearly as high as a normal ak47 bullet. The ak47 is definitely a bad choice without this bullet design, and may still be with it.

Other gun (if I get one): AR-15 – Pretty much any variation of this gun doesn’t heat up nearly as fast as the AK47.  The round of this gun isn’t designed to fragment but instead tumbles inside a target causing lethal wounding. This gun is probably better, but I wanted to explore different options. The AR-15 is probably the best gun for military applications but this isn’t a military application.
This will be a test of which is more lethal, either it’s fragmentation or tumbling.
I didn’t spend much time at all preparing for this attack. Maybe a month, probably less. I have do[ne] this before I lose my nerve. I figured that an under-prepared attack and a meh manifesto is better than no attack and no manifesto.

Reaction

Statistically, millions of migrants have returned to their home countries to reunite with the family they lost contact with when they moved to America. They come here as economic immigrants, not for asylum reasons. This is an encouraging sign that the Hispanic population is willing to return to their home countries if given the right incentive. An incentive that myself and many other patriotic Americans will provide. This will remove the threat of the Hispanic voting bloc which will make up for the loss of millions of baby boomers. This will also make the elites that run corporations realize that it’s not in their interest to continue [to] piss off Americans. Corporate America doesn’t need to be destroyed but just shown that they are on the wrong side of history. That, if they don’t bend, they will break.

Personal Reasons and Thoughts

My whole life I have been preparing for a future that currently doesn’t exist. The job of my dreams will likely be automated. Hispanics will take control of the local and state government of my beloved Texas, changing policy to better suit their needs. They will turn Texas into an instrument of a political coup which will hasten the destruction of our country. The environment is getting worse by the year. If you take nothing else from this document, remember this:

INACTION IS A CHOICE. I can no longer bear the shame of inaction knowing that our founding fathers have endowed me with the rights needed to save our country from the brink destruction. Our European comrades don’t have the gun rights needed to repel the millions of invaders that plaque their country. They have no choice but to sit by and watch their countries burn.

America can only be destroyed from the inside-out. If our country falls, it will be the fault of traitors. This is why I see my actions as faultless. Because this isn’t an act of imperialism but an act of preservation. America is full of hypocrites who will blast my actions as the sole result of racism and hatred of other countries, despite the extensive evidence of all the problems these invaders cause and will cause.

People who are hypocrites because they support imperialistic wars that have caused the loss of tens of thousands of American lives and untold numbers of civilian lives. The argument that mass murder is okay when it is state-sanctioned is absurd. Our government has killed a whole lot more people for a whole lot less.

Even if other non-immigrant targets would have a greater impact, I can’t bring myself to kill my fellow Americans. Even the Americans that seem hell-bent on destroying our country.  Even if they are shameless race mixers, massive polluters, haters of our collective values, etc. One day they will see [the] error of their ways. Either when American patriots fail to reform our country and it collapses or when we save it. But they will see the error of their ways. I promise y’all that.

I am against race mixing because it destroys genetic diversity and creates identity problems. Also because it’s completely unnecessary and selfish. 2nd and 3rd  generation Hispanics form interracial unions at much higher rates than average. Yet another reason to send them back. Cultural and racial diversity is largely temporary. Cultural diversity diminishes as stronger and/or more appealing cultures overtake weaker and/or undesirable ones. Racial diversity will disappear as either race mixing or genocide will take place. But the idea of deporting or murdering all non-white Americans is horrific. Many have been here at least as long as the whites, and have done as much to build our country. The best solution to this, for now, would be to divide America into a confederacy of territories with at least 1 territory for each race. This physical separation would nearly eliminate race mixing and improve social unity by granting each race self-determination within their respective territory(s).

My death is likely inevitable. If I’m not killed by the police, then I’ll probably be gunned down by one of the invaders. Capture in this case if far worse than dying during the shooting because I’ll get the death penalty anyway. Worse still is that I would live knowing that my family despises me. This is why I’m not going to surrender even if I run out of ammo. If I’m captured, it will be because I was subdued somehow.

Remember: it is not cowardly to pick low hanging fruit. AKA Don’t attack heavily guarded areas to fulfill your super-soldier COD fantasy. Attack low-security targets.  Even though you might outgun a security guard or policeman, they likely beat you in armor, training, and numbers. Do not throw away your life on an unnecessarily dangerous target. If a target seems too hot, live to fight another day.

My ideology has not changed for several years. My opinions on automation, immigration, and the rest predate Trump and his campaign for president. I [am] putting this here because some people will blame the President or certain presidential candidates for the attack. This is not the case. I know that the media will probably call me a white supremacist anyway and blame Trump’s rhetoric. The media is infamous for fake news. Their reaction to this attack will likely just confirm that.

Many people think that the fight for America is already lost. They couldn’t be more wrong. This is just the beginning of the fight for America and Europe. I am honored to head the fight to reclaim my country from destruction.

Genesis Compared To The Big Bang Theory And Evolution

Many scientists and members of society think that the Big Bang Theory contradicts God and Creationism.  The Big Bang Theory does not contradict God, the Creator, but rather requires a Creator.  Evolution in nature requires, first and foremost, the creation of organisms and species where some can eventually adapt and evolve.

Genesis 1 states that God created the heavens and the earth on the first day.  He later created light and darkness and after a day and night and then a sunrise, it was called God’s first day (The Bible – New International Version, Genesis 1.1-5).   But each of God’s days, as described in the Bible, are compared, in evolutionary terms, to billions of man’s years.  It wasn’t until God’s fourth day that we have a hint of a man’s day when He created the sun and the moon and the stars (The Bible - New International Version, Genesis 1.14-19).  God created all of the oceans, land masses, plants, and animals on His 3rd, 4th and 5th days and then created man on His 6th day (The Bible – New International Version, Genesis 1.9-27).  Once again, each of God’s days is compared, in evolutionary terms, to billions of man’s years as man did not exist until God’s 6th day.

The Big Bang Theory asserts that this cataclysmic event, that created the universe and earth, took place around 13.77 billion years ago, give or take 0.059 billion years.  “The universe began with an unimaginably enormous density and temperature. This immense primordial energy was the cauldron from which all life arose. Elementary particles were created and destroyed by the ultimate particle accelerator in the first moments of the universe (“Universe 101 – The Big Bang Theory”).

Wollack also said:
"There was matter and there was antimatter. When they met, they annihilated each other and created light. Somehow, it seems that there was a tiny fraction more matter than antimatter, so when nature took its course, the universe was left with some matter, no antimatter, and a tremendous amount of light… Carbon and oxygen were not created in the Big Bang, but rather much later in stars. All of the carbon and oxygen in all living things are made in the nuclear fusion reactors that we call stars. The early stars are massive and short-lived. They consume their hydrogen, helium and lithium and produce heavier elements. When these stars die with a bang, they spread the elements of life, carbon and oxygen, throughout the universe (Universe 101 – Our Universe)."

The above quote is from some of the latest scientific writings about The Big Bang Theory and Wollack still says “Somehow, it seems”, which is scientifically ambiguous and “When these stars die with a bang, they spread the elements of life” but still cannot explain how these “elements of life, carbon, and oxygen” end up forming a living species.  This is where only a Creator can perform this miracle of science.

Pope Francis recently said, “God is not a divine being or a magician, but the Creator who brought everything to life,” Francis continued. “The Big Bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but, rather, requires it. … Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve” (Clark).

The alleged conflicts between Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 has created doubt among scientists, who believe in evolution and random selections of mutated DNA over time and that these mutations are connected to those of an increasingly complex ecosystem.  Since evolution does not put human beings above any other living beings, at some point, human beings will probably become extinct.  The article further contrasts the distinction between science and religion.  The article concludes that science is constantly changing and earlier science is proved false quite often.  God cannot be scientifically proven to be true or false since He requires our faith, and that we can choose to have faith or not (Bothwell).

This article discusses and compares the Bible and the Holy Quran regarding the creation of the universe in comparison of the scientific theories of the Big Bang and other related events.  According to the Big Bang Theory, the universe came into existence from the breaking up of an extremely condensed and solid matter, and before this, no matter existed.  This article states that in the Big Bang Theory, the universe came into existence out of nothingness, but that it happened under an organized and ordered process, and that it did not happen at random.  The article concludes that Allah (or God) brought the universe out of nothing and brought it to life.  It was not an accidental “Big Bang” (Salihuddin).

Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225?-1274) in the Middle Ages did extensive research and wrote about his beliefs about creation and the beginning of the world.  Comparing Multiverse models, like those proposed by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow in The Grand Design, may challenge certain views of a Grand Designer, but not of a Creator.  This article discusses the rather new Large Hedron Collider (nuclear particle accelerator).  Renowned physicist, Michio Kaku remarked that the new experiments would be “a huge step toward unraveling Genesis 1, Verse 1 – what happened in the beginning.  This is a Genesis machine” (Carroll).  The article concludes that when it came to Genesis, St. Thomas Aquinas observed that what is essential is the ‘fact of creation’, not the ‘matter or mode’ of the formation of the world (Carroll). Attempts in the natural sciences to explain these facets of nature do not challenge the ‘fact of creation’.  The genius of St. Thomas Aquinas was to distinguish between creation, understood philosophically and scientifically, and creation understood theologically (Carroll).

According to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS):
"Science is a particular way of knowing about the world. In science, explanations are limited to those based on observations and experiments that can be substantiated by other scientists.
Progress in science consists of the development of better explanations for the causes of natural phenomena. Scientists never can be sure that a given explanation is complete and final. Some of the hypotheses advanced by scientists turn out to be incorrect when tested by further observations or experiments. Yet, many scientific explanations have been so thoroughly tested and confirmed that they are held with great confidence.
Truth in science, however, is never final, and what is accepted as a fact today may be modified or even discarded tomorrow. Science has been greatly successful at explaining natural processes, and this has led not only to increased understanding of the universe but also to major improvements in technology and public health and welfare."
The National Academy of Sciences also says:

Science is not the only way of acquiring knowledge about ourselves and the world around us. Humans gain understanding in many other ways, such as through literature, the arts, philosophical reflection, and religious experience. Scientific knowledge may enrich aesthetic and moral perceptions, but these subjects extend beyond science's realm, which is to obtain a better understanding of the natural world.
Scientists, like many others, are touched with awe at the order and complexity of nature. Indeed, many scientists are deeply religious. But science and religion occupy two separate realms of human experience. Demanding that they be combined detracts from the glory of each.
Many religious persons, including many scientists, hold that God created the universe and the various processes driving physical and biological evolution and that these processes then resulted in the creation of galaxies, our solar system, and life on Earth. This belief, which sometimes is termed 'theistic evolution,' is not in disagreement with scientific explanations of evolution. Indeed, it reflects the remarkable and inspiring character of the physical universe revealed by cosmology, paleontology, molecular biology, and many other scientific disciplines. The above statement is in answer to this question:  “I am religious and I also find science very exciting. Is there a conflict between science and religion?”  So many of the scientific writings still do not give a conclusive explanation of how the Big Bang and “nothingness” ends up creating all the miracles of life… not even the first single-celled microbe is explained.  A typical explanation almost always includes a type of caveat such as, “Scientists never can be sure that a given explanation is complete and final. Some of the hypotheses advanced by scientists turn out to be incorrect when tested by further observations or experiments.” (NASA/WMAP Science Team)

Comprehensive Analysis of Chimpanzee and Human Chromosomes Reveals Average DNA Similarity of 70%
"For the chimp autosomes, the amount of optimally aligned DNA sequence provided similarities between 66 and 76%, depending on the chromosome. In general, the smaller and more gene-dense the chromosomes, the higher the DNA similarity—although there were several notable exceptions defying this trend. Only 69% of the chimpanzee X chromosome was similar to human and only 43% of the Y chromosome. Genome-wide, only 70% of the chimpanzee DNA was similar to human under the most optimal sequence-slice conditions. While, chimpanzees and humans share many localized protein-coding regions of high similarity, the overall extreme discontinuity between the two genomes defies evolutionary timescales and dogmatic presuppositions about a common ancestor. The above peer-reviewed article asserts that the previously stated 98% + comparable DNA between chimpanzees and humans is no longer an accurate assertion.  More comprehensive DNA analysis shows a similarity of around 66% to 76%.  This kind of continually changing science is one of the many reasons that the evolution of primates into man is not believed by so many people.

In conclusion, it can only be from God (the Creator) that all of the above miracles and scientific facts and conclusions could have happened since nothing capable of living would have survived a cataclysmic event such as a “Big Bang” type explosion.

“The Americans Who Risked Everything”

I first heard and read this story around 20 years ago, first while listening to the Rush Limbaugh Show on talk radio (probably WWL 870 AM back then). I was also a subscriber to The Limbaugh Letter, a monthly newsletter that republished highlights from the shows that month and was able to read the story as well.  It always stuck with me.

The Americans Who Risked Everything

My father, Rush H. Limbaugh, Jr., delivered this oft-requested address locally a number of times, but it had never before appeared in print until it appeared in The Limbaugh Letter. My dad was renowned for his oratory skills and for his original mind; this speech is, I think, a superb demonstration of both. I will always be grateful to him for instilling in me a passion for the ideas and lives of America’s Founders, as well as a deep appreciation for the inspirational power of words which you will see evidenced here:

“Our Lives, Our Fortunes, Our Sacred Honor”

It was a glorious morning. The sun was shining and the wind was from the southeast. Up especially early, a tall bony, redheaded young Virginian found time to buy a new thermometer, for which he paid three pounds, fifteen shillings. He also bought gloves for Martha, his wife, who was ill at home.

Thomas Jefferson arrived early at the statehouse. The temperature was 72.5 degrees and the horseflies weren’t nearly so bad at that hour. It was a lovely room, very large, with gleaming white walls. The chairs were comfortable. Facing the single door were two brass fireplaces, but they would not be used today.

The moment the door was shut, and it was always kept locked, the room became an oven. The tall windows were shut, so that loud quarreling voices could not be heard by passersby. Small openings atop the windows allowed a slight stir of air, and also a large number of horseflies. Jefferson records that “the horseflies were dexterous in finding necks, and the silk of stockings was nothing to them.” All discussing was punctuated by the slap of hands on necks.

On the wall at the back, facing the president’s desk, was a panoply — consisting of a drum, swords, and banners seized from Fort Ticonderoga the previous year. Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold had captured the place, shouting that they were taking it “in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress!”

Now Congress got to work, promptly taking up an emergency measure about which there was discussion but no dissension. “Resolved: That an application be made to the Committee of Safety of Pennsylvania for a supply of flints for the troops at New York.”

Then Congress transformed itself into a committee of the whole. The Declaration of Independence was read aloud once more, and debate resumed. Though Jefferson was the best writer of all of them, he had been somewhat verbose. Congress hacked the excess away. They did a good job, as a side-by-side comparison of the rough draft and the final text shows. They cut the phrase “by a self-assumed power.” “Climb” was replaced by “must read,” then “must” was eliminated, then the whole sentence, and soon the whole paragraph was cut. Jefferson groaned as they continued what he later called “their depredations.” “Inherent and inalienable rights” came out “certain unalienable rights,” and to this day no one knows who suggested the elegant change.

A total of 86 alterations were made. Almost 500 words were eliminated, leaving 1,337. At last, after three days of wrangling, the document was put to a vote.

Here in this hall Patrick Henry had once thundered: “I am no longer a Virginian, sir, but an American.” But today the loud, sometimes bitter argument stilled, and without fanfare, the vote was taken from north to south by colonies, as was the custom. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted.

There were no trumpets blown. No one stood on his chair and cheered. The afternoon was waning and Congress had no thought of delaying the full calendar of routine business on its hands. For several hours they worked on many other problems before adjourning for the day.

Much To Lose

What kind of men were the 56 signers who adopted the Declaration of Independence and who, by their signing, committed an act of treason against the crown? To each of you, the names Franklin, Adams, Hancock, and Jefferson are almost as familiar as household words. Most of us, however, know nothing of the other signers. Who were they? What happened to them?

I imagine that many of you are somewhat surprised at the names not there: George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Patrick Henry. All were elsewhere.

Ben Franklin was the only really old man. Eighteen were under 40; three were in their 20s. Of the 56 almost half – 24 – were judges and lawyers. Eleven were merchants, nine were landowners and farmers, and the remaining 12 were doctors, ministers, and politicians.

With only a few exceptions, such as Samuel Adams of Massachusetts, these were men of substantial property. All but two had families. The vast majority were men of education and standing in their communities. They had economic security as few men had in the 18th Century.

Each had more to lose from revolution than he had to gain by it. John Hancock, one of the richest men in America, already had a price of 500 pounds on his head. He signed in enormous letters so that his Majesty could now read his name without glasses and could now double the reward. Ben Franklin wryly noted: “Indeed we must all hang together, otherwise we shall most assuredly hang separately.”

Fat Benjamin Harrison of Virginia told tiny Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts: “With me, it will all be over in a minute, but you, you will be dancing on air an hour after I am gone.”

These men knew what they risked. The penalty for treason was death by hanging. And remember, a great British fleet was already at anchor in New York Harbor.

They were sober men. There were no dreamy-eyed intellectuals or draft card burners here. They were far from hot-eyed fanatics yammering for an explosion. They simply asked for the status quo. It was change they resisted. It was equality with the mother country they desired. It was taxation with representation they sought. They were all conservatives, yet they rebelled.

It was principle, not property, that had brought these men to Philadelphia. Two of them became presidents of the United States. Seven of them became state governors. One died in office as vice president of the United States. Several would go on to be U.S. Senators. One, the richest man in America, in 1828 founded the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. One, a delegate from Philadelphia, was the only real poet, musician, and philosopher of the signers. (It was he, Francis Hopkinson not Betsy Ross who designed the United States flag.)

Richard Henry Lee, a delegate from Virginia, had introduced the resolution to adopt the Declaration of Independence in June of 1776. He was prophetic in his concluding remarks: “Why then sir, why do we longer delay? Why still deliberate? Let this happy day give birth to an American Republic. Let her arise not to devastate and to conquer but to reestablish the reign of peace and law.

“The eyes of Europe are fixed upon us. She demands of us a living example of freedom that may exhibit a contrast in the felicity of the citizen to the ever-increasing tyranny which desolates her polluted shores. She invites us to prepare an asylum where the unhappy may find solace, and the persecuted repost.

“If we are not this day wanting in our duty, the names of the American Legislatures of 1776 will be placed by posterity at the side of all of those whose memory has been and ever will be dear to virtuous men and good citizens.”

Though the resolution was formally adopted July 4, it was not until July 8 that two of the states authorized their delegates to sign, and it was not until August 2 that the signers met at Philadelphia to actually put their names to the Declaration.

William Ellery, delegate from Rhode Island, was curious to see the signers’ faces as they committed this supreme act of personal courage. He saw some men sign quickly, “but in no face was he able to discern real fear.” Stephan Hopkins, Ellery’s colleague from Rhode Island, was a man past 60. As he signed with a shaking pen, he declared: “My hand trembles, but my heart does not.”

“Most Glorious Service”

Even before the list was published, the British marked down every member of Congress suspected of having put his name to treason. All of them became the objects of vicious manhunts. Some were taken. Some, like Jefferson, had narrow escapes. All who had property or families near British strongholds suffered.

· Francis Lewis, New York delegate saw his home plundered — and his estates in what is now Harlem — completely destroyed by British Soldiers. Mrs. Lewis was captured and treated with great brutality. Though she was later exchanged for two British prisoners through the efforts of Congress, she died from the effects of her abuse.

· William Floyd, another New York delegate, was able to escape with his wife and children across Long Island Sound to Connecticut, where they lived as refugees without income for seven years. When they came home they found a devastated ruin.

· Philips Livingstone had all his great holdings in New York confiscated and his family driven out of their home. Livingstone died in 1778 still working in Congress for the cause.

· Louis Morris, the fourth New York delegate, saw all his timber, crops, and livestock taken. For seven years he was barred from his home and family.

· John Hart of Trenton, New Jersey, risked his life to return home to see his dying wife. Hessian soldiers rode after him, and he escaped in the woods. While his wife lay on her deathbed, the soldiers ruined his farm and wrecked his homestead. Hart, 65, slept in caves and woods as he was hunted across the countryside. When at long last, emaciated by hardship, he was able to sneak home, he found his wife had already been buried, and his 13 children taken away. He never saw them again. He died a broken man in 1779, without ever finding his family.

· Dr. John Witherspoon, signer, was president of the College of New Jersey, later called Princeton. The British occupied the town of Princeton, and billeted troops in the college. They trampled and burned the finest college library in the country.

· Judge Richard Stockton, another New Jersey delegate signer, had rushed back to his estate in an effort to evacuate his wife and children. The family found refuge with friends, but a Tory sympathizer betrayed them. Judge Stockton was pulled from bed in the night and brutally beaten by the arresting soldiers. Thrown into a common jail, he was deliberately starved. Congress finally arranged for Stockton’s parole, but his health was ruined. The judge was released as an invalid, when he could no longer harm the British cause. He returned home to find his estate looted and did not live to see the triumph of the Revolution. His family was forced to live off charity.

· Robert Morris, merchant prince of Philadelphia, delegate and signer, met Washington’s appeals and pleas for money year after year. He made and raised arms and provisions which made it possible for Washington to cross the Delaware at Trenton. In the process he lost 150 ships at sea, bleeding his own fortune and credit almost dry.

· George Clymer, Pennsylvania signer, escaped with his family from their home, but their property was completely destroyed by the British in the Germantown and Brandywine campaigns.

· Dr. Benjamin Rush, also from Pennsylvania, was forced to flee to Maryland. As a heroic surgeon with the army, Rush had several narrow escapes.

· John Martin, a Tory in his views previous to the debate, lived in a strongly loyalist area of Pennsylvania. When he came out for independence, most of his neighbors and even some of his relatives ostracized him. He was a sensitive and troubled man, and many believed this action killed him. When he died in 1777, his last words to his tormentors were: “Tell them that they will live to see the hour when they shall acknowledge it [the signing] to have been the most glorious service that I have ever rendered to my country.”

· William Ellery, Rhode Island delegate, saw his property and home burned to the ground.

· Thomas Lynch, Jr., South Carolina delegate, had his health broken from privation and exposures while serving as a company commander in the military. His doctors ordered him to seek a cure in the West Indies and on the voyage, he and his young bride were drowned at sea.

· Edward Rutledge, Arthur Middleton, and Thomas Heyward, Jr., the other three South Carolina signers, were taken by the British in the siege of Charleston. They were carried as prisoners of war to St. Augustine, Florida, where they were singled out for indignities. They were exchanged at the end of the war, the British in the meantime having completely devastated their large landholdings and estates.

· Thomas Nelson, signer of Virginia, was at the front in command of the Virginia military forces. With British General Charles Cornwallis in Yorktown, fire from 70 heavy American guns began to destroy Yorktown piece by piece. Lord Cornwallis and his staff moved their headquarters into Nelson’s palatial home. While American cannonballs were making a shambles of the town, the house of Governor Nelson remained untouched. Nelson turned in rage to the American gunners and asked, “Why do you spare my home?” They replied, “Sir, out of respect to you.” Nelson cried, “Give me the cannon!” and fired on his magnificent home himself, smashing it to bits. But Nelson’s sacrifice was not quite over. He had raised $2 million for the Revolutionary cause by pledging his own estates. When the loans came due, a newer peacetime Congress refused to honor them, and Nelson’s property was forfeited. He was never reimbursed. He died, impoverished, a few years later at the age of 50.

Lives, Fortunes, Honor

Of those 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, in each case with brutal treatment. Several lost wives, sons or entire families. One lost his 13 children. Two wives were brutally treated. All were at one time or another the victims of manhunts and driven from their homes. Twelve signers had their homes completely burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one defected or went back on his pledged word. Their honor, and the nation they sacrificed so much to create is still intact.

And, finally, there is the New Jersey signer, Abraham Clark.

He gave two sons to the officer corps in the Revolutionary Army. They were captured and sent to that infamous British prison hulk afloat in New York Harbor known as the hell ship Jersey, where 11,000 American captives were to die. The younger Clarks were treated with a special brutality because of their father. One was put in solitary and given no food. With the end almost in sight, with the war almost won, no one could have blamed Abraham Clark for acceding to the British request when they offered him his sons’ lives if he would recant and come out for the King and Parliament. The utter despair in this man’s heart, the anguish in his very soul, must reach out to each one of us down through 200 years with his answer: “No.”

The 56 signers of the Declaration Of Independence proved by their every deed that they made no idle boast when they composed the most magnificent curtain line in history. “And for the support of this Declaration with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

My friends, I know you have a copy of the Declaration of Independence somewhere around the house – in an old history book (newer ones may well omit it), an encyclopedia, or one of those artificially aged “parchments” we all got in school years ago. I suggest that each of you take the time this month to read through the text of the Declaration, one of the most noble and beautiful political documents in human history.

There is no more profound sentence than this: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness…”

These are far more than mere poetic words. The underlying ideas that infuse every sentence of this treatise have sustained this nation for more than two centuries. They were forged in the crucible of great sacrifice. They are living words that spring from and satisfy the deepest cries for liberty in the human spirit.

“Sacred honor” isn’t a phrase we use much these days, but every American life is touched by the bounty of this, the Founders’ legacy. It is freedom, tested by blood, and watered with tears.
